Artist Statement

I am continually intrigued by the challenges and versatility of fiber as a medium, the way it can be manipulated to create new objects or images maintaining the essence of the source, yet bearing little or no resemblance to its original form. I enjoy working with a wide variety of materials, including cotton, wool, silk, soy, bamboo, and synthetic fabrics, threads, or loose fibers; various papers or paper pulp; or combinations of these materials. I sometimes include unexpected materials or found objects in my work to surprise the viewer. I choose from many different techniques to produce my work, including stitching, fusing, felting, casting, and an extensive range of surface design processes. My design approach is generally spontaneous and exploratory, allowing me to consider and incorporate ideas as they occur to me during the creative process, or perhaps redefine or eliminate some planned aspect in favor of following a new direction to see where it leads me. I love playing with color, texture, and pattern, and enjoy the problem-solving challenges that inevitably occur when constructing my work!
